Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses raises $281,648 for BackStoppers

 

St. Louis, MO--Officials of the St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association presented a check for $281,648.45 to The BackStoppers on Thursday, Dec. 22 at the St. Louis County Library.

The check is the proceeds of the 25th annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses boxing show Nov. 23 at Scottrade Center. The event featured 17 matches between teams of area firefighters and police officers who won the team trophy 9-8.  The event also observed boxing’s traditional “10-Count” to honor five public servants who lost their lives in the line of duty between Thanksgiving of 2010 and 2011.

Jerry Clinton, the association’s executive director, presented the check to The BackStoppers’ president Dan Raniere and executive director Ron Battelle as area police and fire officials looked on.

“As we celebrate Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses 25th anniversary, our supporters have again stepped up to assist The BackStoppers when the need is great,” said Clinton. “During this holiday season, we are pleased to continue our long-standing efforts on behalf of The BackStoppers and the families of those who give their lives protecting our lives and property,” Clinton said.

Also present were David Stokes, President and CEO of Grey Eagle Distributors, title sponsor of the event; Ring of Champion sponsors, members of the Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses committee; and association officials Jack Martorelli, Steve Holley and Jim Hubbard.

This year’s Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses proceeds bring total contributions to more than $3.6 million since the event was first held in 1987.

Ten St. Louis corporations and organizations made generous contributions and were recognized as Ring of Champions sponsors. They were The Boeing Company, Marc Bulger Foundation, Clayco, Dave Mungenast Motorsports, Dave Sinclair Ford, J.D. Streett Company, Sam’s Club, Centene, St. Louis Area Buick GMC Dealers Association and Complete Auto Repair.

Among the highlights of the evening was announcement of a $63,808 donation to the BackStoppers from Anheuser-Busch and its area wholesalers through a “Hometown Heroes” promotion.

Five law enforcement officers and EMT emergency medical responders who died in the line of duty this year were honored by boxing’s Ten-Count ceremony.  Eva Miller of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department sang the National Anthem, National Football League

Hall-of-Famer Jackie Smith sang “Danny Boy” after the Ten-Count and St. Louis County Police Officer Patrick Nigh later brought the crowd to their feet with his rendition of “God Bless America.”

The event is presented by the St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association and the title sponsors for the 25th year were Grey Eagle Distributors, the St. Louis County Anheuser-Busch wholesaler, and the brewery’s Budweiser brand.

The BackStoppers is a 3,000-member organization of St. Louis-area citizens, who provide immediate and long-term financial support to families of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.           

The BackStoppers cover St. Louis City; St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Ste. Genevieve, Perry, Cape Girardeau, Franklin, St. Francois, Lincoln, Pike, Warren and Washington counties in Missouri; and St. Clair, Madison, Monroe. Bond and Clinton counties in Illinois.  BackStoppers also cover members of Troop C of the Missouri Highway Patrol and District 11 of the Illinois State Police.

Police Take Narrow Win in
25th Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses

It went until the final round of the final fight to determine that area Police Officers won a 9-8 team decision over area Firefighters in the 25th Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Wednesday night (Nov. 23) at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Wellston Police Officer Ron Freeman won a judges’ decision over Ramin (pronounced Raymond) Warmbrodt of the Heculaneum (MO) Volunteer Fire Department in the night’s final bout.
Firefighters, who had won the last two years, took an early 5-1 lead before Police Officers won six consecutive fights in mid-evening to pull ahead.  The teams traded victories before the last two went to the Police Officers.
Proceeds from Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses benefit The BackStoppers, an organization that assists the families of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical responders who lose their lives in the line of duty.  Attendance was 14,363 and funds generated will increase the $3.2 million the event has raised for The BackStoppers through 2010. The amount raised Wednesday night is expected to be announced by year end.

Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Recognition Awards 2011

 

Four persons closely associated with Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses for many years are receiving the organization’s Recognition Awards in 2011.

They are Christy Brown, long time volunteer for Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses; Gil Carcia, boxing coach for Illinois boxers; and Jerry Perry and his daughter Amy Perry Lamia, who have been instrumental in designing and selling Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses t-shirts that have been available in many restaurants and bars in the St. Louis area. 

Christy Brown has volunteered at Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses since 1988, the event’s second year.  She recruits and organizes other volunteers who sell shirts, programs and have other duties at he event.

Christy is married to boxing Coach Bob Brown and they have daughters Ashley and Danielle who are both in college.

 We congratulate Christy Brown for her many years of service at the event and for receiving a Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Recognition Award.

Gil Carcia is a native of St. Louis and lives in Fairmont City, Illinois.  He has been helping Terry Davis of  Granite City train Illinois boxers for more than 15 years.


A roofer by trade, Gil boxed in his younger years and graduated from Central High School.  He and his wife have four children ranging in age from 33 to 21 and Gil became interested in coaching when sons Patrick and Kenny were boxing.

For the long hours he has spent in the gym coaching Police Officers and Firefighters, we are pleased to present him with a Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Recognition Award.

Jerry Perry and his daughter Amy Perry Lamia have been supporting Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses for many years through the sale of special event shirts to area restaurants and bars.


Jerry is a 30-years plus veteran of the embroidery and silkscreen products business and has been joined by his daughter Amy who serves as President of Perry Promotional Products.  In addition, Jerry’s background includes institutional computer sales and ownership for six years of Sportsman’s Park restaurant. He and his wife Bonnye have two married daughters, Amy and Lindsey and three grandchildren. 

Amy starred in several sports at St. Joseph’s Academy and attended Southwest Missouri State University.  She was Sales Manager for Limited Brands before joining Perry Promotion Products.  She and her husband Nick are parents of one-year-old Cooper.

In appreciation of their hard work in raising more than $50,000 for The BackStoppers by promoting Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses in the community through event shirts, we are pleased to honor Jerry Perry and Amy Perry Lamia as recepients of Recognition Awards.

2011 Budweiser Guns 'N Hoses Awards

Mark F. Gartland Memorial Award

Frank Henderson, a boxing coach who also was a Marine Corps champion, is the 2011 recipient of the Mark F. Gartland Memorial Award. 

Captain Gartland passed away in 1997 after a two-year battle with cancer.  He was 50 years old and a 24-year veteran of the St. Louis County Police Department.  In addition to being an extraordinary law enforcement official, Captain Gartland was an outstanding athlete and a loyal supporters of Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses.  He recruited boxers and concentrated their training at the St. Louis Police and Fire Academy in Wellston where the Fitness Center is dedicated to his memory.

The Mark F. Gartland Memorial Award is presented annually to a person who demonstrates Mark's dedication to Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses, his courage in fighting adversity and efforts to improve the community's quality of life.

Frank Henderson is a native of St. Louis and a graduate of Beaumont High School.  His boxing experience dates to 1960.  He has trained boxers in both St. Louis City and County.

While serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966-69, he was a machine gunner in Viet Nam, serving with heavyweight champion Ken Norton.  After his military service, Henderson was a member of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department for 10 years and won the middleweight title during the 1978 International Police Association boxing tournament in San Diego.

He later joined the Missouri Highway Patrol and retired as with the rank of Corporal after 22 years of service in Jefferson City and in Troop Cthat includes the St. Louis area.  He continued training boxers by joining with Tim Burke in coaching those in St. Louis County.

He and his wife Debra have four children.

In recognition of his many years of dedicated support of the Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses, and St. Louis amateur boxing, we proudly present the Mark F. Gartland Memorial Award to Frank Henderson.


Jimmy S. Smith Memorial Award

Garry Garrison, Sr., a Firefighter with the Mehlville Fire ProtectionDistrict, is the 2010 recipient of the Jimmy S. Smith Memorial Award.

The award honors the memory of Jimmy Smith who passed away in 1994 after a valiant fight against cancer.  Jimmy was a 20-year veteran of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and a participant in Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses in 1993.  The award is presented annually to a person who has shown enthusiastic dedication to the event over many years.

 

Garry Garrison is a graduate of Riverview Gardens High School and Southeast Missouri State University.  He worked for the Webster Groves Fire Department for nine years before joining the Mehlville Fire Protection District in 1986.

At Mehlville he has received two Crew Life Saving Awards.  He was honored in 1993 for his role in rescuing a victim trapped in a card in a flash flood and in 1997 for helping rescue a man trapped in a collapsed trench.  In his off-duty time, Garry played for the St. Louis Falcons Rugby Club for 15 years and helped the team finish second in the nation in 1979 and 1980.

Garry boxed in the 1993 Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses and since then has helping with ticket sales, ring preparation and assisting boxers.  He is the father of Garry Jr., Brian, Kevin and daughter Julie.

Pairings set for 25th Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Nov. 23, Proceeds To BackStoppers 

A card of 34 area police officers and firefighters has been set for the 25th Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses boxing show on Wednesday, Nov. 23 (Thanksgiving Eve) at 7 p.m. at Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Proceeds benefit The BackStoppers.

The event will feature 17 matches including three women’s bouts. Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses boxers represent 22 police and fire departments in Missouri and Illinois. Boxers are matched by age, weight and experience and will box a maximum of three 90-second rounds wearing all boxing safety equipment.

Boxers will receive uniforms and introduced at a public rally on Thursday, Nov. 17 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn/Viking, 10709 Watson Road in Sunset Hills.

Proceeds will add to the more than $3.2 million that Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses has raised for The Backstoppers, a 2,000-member group that assists the families of police officers or firefighters who perish while on duty.

Boxing’s ceremonial “Ten Count” will honor Deputy U.S. Marshal John Perry, 48 years old, who died March 8 of gunshot wounds he received serving an arrest warrant; Sherese Bishop, an EMT with the Northeast Ambulance and Fire Protection District who collapsed while trying to help resuscitate a man March. She died a few days later in the hospital at the age of 37, leaving behind a young daughter; Daryl Hall, 34, was a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Officer who died after being fatally shot as he tried to stop a man shooting a gun on a nightclub parking lot; Maplewood Police Sergeant George Ross, a member of the department for 33 years, suffered what proved to be a fatal heart attack while driving back to the station from the funeral of St. Louis Police Officer David Haynes; William “Mick” Mudd, 38, died of a heart attack December 16 after a particularly difficult shift at the Vinita Park Police Department during which he spread salt on an icy street and helped carry a resident to an ambulance.

Police, Firefighters Are Training for

25th Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Nov. 23

 

            Police Officers and Firefighters are training in seven gyms in the St. Louis area, sharpening their boxing skills in preparation for the 25th anniversary Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Nov. 23 at Scottrade Center to benefit The BackStoppers.

            Those training will take part in a “box off” on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the St. Louis County Police and Fire Academy in Wellston.  The box-off will determine the card for the show at 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve.

            A card of approximately 17 bouts, including at least one women’s fight, is expected according to Jerry Clinton, Executive Director of Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses and St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association, a 501c3 charity.

Firefighters take 24th Annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Title

When a shoulder injury prevented St. Louis County police officer Steve Park from continuing, the last-bout victory went to St. Louis Fire Department firefighter Chad Vancil and the department claimed a 9-8 team victory in 17 bouts at the 24th Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses Wednesday night (Nov. 24) at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Firefighters now have won two consecutive years following several years of police officers winning the team trophy. Last year firefighters won by an 11-6 team score.

Proceeds from Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses benefit The BackStoppers, an organization that assists the families of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical responders who lose their lives in the line of duty.  Attendance was 16,212 and funds generated will substantially increase the $3 million the event has raised for The BackStoppers through 2009. The amount raised Wednesday night is expected to be announced by year end.
